Pompeii’s campaign for ’08 is over

October 31, 2008

FOR the second time in consecutive seasons top stayer Pompeii Ruler has broken down and will not race for up to a year.

It continues a frustrating run of injuries for the talented but trouble prone six-year-old.

He has apparently damaged a flexor tendon when a gallant behind DouroValley second in last Saturday’s Yalumba Stakes.

That was his fifth start after nearly year off and his promising form saw him rated highly in the betting for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Last year he injured a suspensory ligament after a track gallop early in the Spring which saw him out of racing until he resumed with a impressive third to Weekend Hussler in the Memsie Stake on August 30.

It has been a roller-coaster so far Spring for top trainer Mick Price.

Early in the season he lost promising galloper, and Cox Plate hopeful, Light Fantastic who trained off after a brilliant win first up.

He still has a leading Cox Plate contendor with former Kiwi galloper Alamosa wgo scored an impressive win in last Saturday’s Toorak Handicap.
