Ladies in the limelight at Flemington

A MASSIVE crowd of over 100,000 at Flemington today witnessed one of the biggest upsets in Victoria Derby history.
Rebel Raider, an out-of-form 100-1 shot supplied female jockey Clare Lindop her biggest career win when she simply outstayed the odds-on favourite Whobegotyou ($1.75).
Both horses made moves at the same time but Lindop, obviously confident she was travelling better let her mount stride out and he did the rest.
Some reports suggested that the favourite did not stay the 2500 metres - well he did, he beat the third horse home by 2-1/4 lengths, the trouble was that Rebel Raider stayed it better and was 2-1/2 lengths in front of him.
Winning trainer Leon Macdonald said he had little confidence going into the race.
He said: “If we had drawn one, we might have got a cushy run and had a chance but we had (barrier) 15. But we also had Clare.’’

It continues a remarkable year for the Adelaide based hoop who early this year was the first female jockey to win a section of the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.
In a further bonus for Lindop she has also picked up the mount on the Bart Cummings’ Moetize, a definite chance, in next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
Apart from Lindop the ladies were to the fore at Flemington in the shape of trainer Gai Waterhouse who scored a Group 1 double with highly promising colt Northern Meteor in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Theseo in the Mackinnon Stakes.
The fourth Group 1 on the day, the Myer Classic, was taken out by Sheikh Mohammed’s 4YO mare Forensics who strolled home.
